Long Biodab dad b. 1942 034143 DeHaven, 69, grew up on Jenifer Street on Madison's near East Side, where he began playing his trumpet in earnest. After ~ar in college, he joined the U.S. Air Force and played in service bands in San Antonio and Oldahoma City. He returned ttrMadison and finished his degree in music education. Starting in 1962, the Doc DeHaven Combo cut severallPs and 45s on the Cuca label out of Sa uk City. The albums included "Doc Swings (a little)," "Just Off State Street," and "The Earl of Madison," which honored his clarinetist, Earl Smith. Those albums were compiled into a CD called "The Best of Doc DeHaven." Ten years ago, DeHaven collaborated with his vocalist daughter, Kelly, on a CD called "There Is No Greater love." And in 1996, he recorded his most recent release, "Jazz Sea pes." DeHaven taught music for 32 years in Deerfield and Monona Grove high schools, and began his own booking agency in 1973. Six years later, he set up a music clinic scholarship fund with the UW Foundation to honor his friend, Earl Smith. Over the last 20 years, the fund has provided more than $23,000 for student scholarships. The Doc DeHaven Combo has won Madison Magazine's "Best of Madison" awards for local jazz and dance band 10 times between 1982 and 1994. Isthmus named the combo "Best Jazz Band" in 1992, and that same year, DeHaven was awarded "Jazz Personality ofthe Year" by the Isthmus Jazz Festival. DeHaven still performs regularly, adding his trumpet to the Brad Pageant Orchestra on Friday nights at Austin's Restaurant in the Crowne Plaza Hotel on East Washington Avenue.
