Demos (b. 1962) holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Composition from the Clevelirnd Institute of Music and Case Western Reserve Universitywhere he studied with Donald Erb. He also holds a Master of Music degree in composition from the Indiana University School of Music where he studied with Donald Erb, Eugene O'Brien, J1larvey Sollberger, and John Eaton. He received a Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he studied composition with Roger Hannay. Demos has received performances by the Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Colorado Springs Symphony, South Carolina Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Baton Rouge Symphony, Cleveland Institute of Music Symphony Orchestra, Georgia State University Symphony Orchestra and the Georgia State University Symphonic Winds among others. His chamber works have also been performed by North/South Consonance, Thamyris New Music Enslemble, neoPhonia New Music Ensemble, members ofthe California EAR. Unit, the Rialto Brass Quintet and the Converse College Faculty Brass Quintet. He has received commissions from the Cleveland Orchestra, Nashville Chamber Orchestra, Atlanta Community Orchestra, AHEPA Centennial Foundation, Inc., VoiceBox (an a cappella vocal ensemble based in Cincinnati, OH), and the Atlanta Women's Choir. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including ASCAP Standard Awards and Honorable Mentions in the ASCAP/Rudolf Nissim Composers Competition, the Hultgren Solo 'Cello Biennial Composition Competition and the AUROS Group for New Music Composers Competition. His music was featured at a ceremony dedicating a statue erected for the 1996 Centennial Games in Atlanta, at the 1996 National Collegl'!! Music Society Conference also held in Atlanta and at the 1999 National Conference ofthe Society of Composers, Inc. held in New York City. His music is published by MMB Music, Inc. Demos currently holds the position of Assistant Professor of Composition at the Georgia State University School of Music. He is the Founder and Musical Director of the neoPhonfa New Music Ensemble. Outside of his wor~: at Georgia State University, he sits on the National Council of the Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI) and serves as the Musical Director for the Greek Islanders, an ethnic ensemble he founded in 1982 specializing in Greek folk dance music. This ensemble performs throughout the United States and has recorded three commercial albums. ,~110S was married in 1991 to Maria Elaine Spell of Charleston, South Carolina. The couple have two children, John Nikitas Demos, born in 1995 and Eleni Maria Demos born in 1998.
