A native Detroiter, William Banfield graduates from Cass Tech High School as a
.~ lsic/science major. He went on to earn a bachelors in music from the New England Conservatory of Music, a Masters of Theology from Boston University and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Banfield is currently composer in residence of the African American Arts Institute, and director of the Soul Revue Black Popular Arts Ensemble, Indiana University. As a guitarist he is an active performer having worked with such national acts as, Billy Paul, Alphonso Johnson, Ndugu Chancelor, Najee, Marion Meadows, as well as producers Andre Fisher and Michael Powell.
As a composer he has had works performed by the Detroit Metropolitan Orchestra, Savannah Symphony, Thamyris Atlanta Chamber Players, Plymouth Music Series and the Minnesota Symphonia. Two recent compositions were recorded and released on Atlantic Records by the All Female Jazz ensemble Straight Ahead.
Dr. Banfield's scholarly interests have taken him as a lecturer to Bowling Green and Rhode Island Universities and Wellesley College.
He has written articles in the McMillan and Carlson Press Encyclopedias on African 'erican culture and History. |
