| Program Notes | "At the still point, there the dance is" is the third in a series of my compositions with titles borrowed from T.S. Eliot. The other two are: "And time future contained in time past" for solo piano, and "by a grace of sense surrounded" for string quartet. The first two movements of this work portray the journey inward toward the still point. The third movement is the dance itself. I. Aria--The dard, lyrical aria tells of inner struggle and soul-searching. It is passionate, with both restrained and explosive music. II. Meditation--The music of the second movement is mostly reflective and peaceful. the string quartet plays in slow motion while the solo clarinet ripples and flutters gracefully in and around the harmony of the strings. There is some tension in this movement, but it is bittersweet rather than explosive as in the ARIA. III. Dance--Here the dance is. In a swirl of ecstatic, dizzy music, the dance is both light and dak, moving and still, ancient and new, personal and communal. |
