Dedication
Program NotesThis brief piece, composed late in 2003 as part of the "Hechinger Encores" series made possible by the John and June Hechinger Fund for the Commissioning of New Orchestral Works. The score calls for the same orchestra Beethoven originally specified for his Third Symphony.

This piece was composed specifically for a program which included the Eroica Symphony. It is based on a counterpoint figure in the fugal section of the second movement, the "Marcia funebre." Most of the work was written in a style that would have been acceptable a hundred years before Beethoven. Toward the climax I have layered and extended the dissonances which then resolve into a direct quotation from the "Eroica." Since I have orchestrated the piece in the style of Beethoven, the only aspect of compositional style of my own which remains is the one which I consider to be my most characteristic: structural use of dissonance. Consonance-dissonance-resolution is heard over the span of minutes rather than seconds.
