| Marketing Copy | This aubade (morning music) was designed especially as a professional/student collaboration for Meet the Music, which is the educational program of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, with local student musicians as stand-partners with the professionals. In the 17th and 18th centuries, aubades were played in honor of royalty. In this case, the honored personage is Jennifer Diener, who has been very important in the life of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, who commissioned the work. |

| Program Notes | An aubade is morning music, as opposed to the serenade, evening music. In the 17th and 18th centuries, aubades were played in honor of royalty. In this particular case, the honored personage is Jennifer Diener, who has been very important in the life of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, serving as both President and Chairman of the Board of Directors. One could say that the music reflects her energy and enthusiasm for the Chamber Orchestra. This aubade was also composed for Meet the Music, which is the educational program of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. One could say that this music reflects the energy and enthusiasm of young musicians. For the premiere in February 1997, members of LACO collaborated with student musicians drawn from Los Angeles-area high schools in performances attended by junior and senior high school students. The student musicians were stand-partners with the professionals: the music is designed to accomodate students (or amateurs) on the 2nd, or inside-stand parts. In our case, students played the 2nd wind parts, all 4 percussion parts (but not timpani) and served as inside-stand partners for the strings. In addition, at least one professional played inside-stand string parts. While the music reflects certain technical restrictions, it is designed to sound like a 'real' (as opposed to student-level) piece. Students and/or amateurs can collaborate with professionals on a piece which is, I hope, both challenging and exciting to play, and which is undoubtedly from the late-20th century. --Donald Crockett |
