Program NotesThree Passiontide Motets (1999, rev. 2001) for SATB choir unaccompanied was commissioned for and is dedicated to Rochester, NY based choral ensemble Madrigalia and director Roger Wilhelm. Madrigalia has had a history of supporting choral music of all kinds, especially American music, and these motets are dedicated in appreciation for what the group and its director have contributed to the musical life of Rochester and the music repertory.

The three Latin texts are three versions from the traditional Stabat Mater text describing Mary's lament at Jesus' crucifixion. The first motet is based on the opening verse, commenting on Mary weeping at the cross. The second motet text medititates on the meaning of the crucifixion. The last motet is a contemplation on the gift of God, through Jesus' suffering, so that we may have the undeserved gift of paradise. --Carson Cooman
