Program NotesSapphire is a one-movement work comprising of three distinct sections and lasting about eight minutes in its entirety. The first section is relatively fast and features two primary musical ideas--a rhythmic, repeated chordal pattern and the main theme presented by the brass section. Section I concludes with a metric modulation which sets the tempo for Section II. The slow, second section features the English horn in a solo role against an amorphous, sustained chordal background provided primarily by tuned percussion and reinforced by high woodwinds and strings. A brief dialogue between the strings, brass and woodwinds, featuring a rapid exchange of the primary chordal material, connects Section II to Section III. The initial melodic and chordal ideas are then reexamined in the third section where they are combined, integrated and further developed. --Margaret Neilson, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra
