Title NameSphaerenklaenge Walzer, Op. 235
Marketing CopySPHÄRENKLÄNGE WALZER (MUSIC OF THE SPHERES WALTZ), OP. 235 was composed by Josef Strauss (1827-1870) for a medical association ball in 1868. The first performance took place at that event on January 21 in the Sofiensaal in Vienna, the composer at the baton. It takes its name from the Pythagorean theory which suggests that every planet in the universe exudes its own musical note as it orbits in its course among the stars. The subject of the waltz proved somewhat controversial as the writers of the Fremden-Blatt observed that its music, inappropriately for a medical ball, reminded its attendees of the next world.
