Program NotesNow and Then, completed in 1985, is a fourteen-minute composition for chamber orchestra. It was composed for and is dedicated to the Icelandic conductor, Gudmundur Emielsson. The composition is in one movement with four major contrasting sections indicated by tempo, texture, and mood. The phrase, now and then, is associated with time and in the context of this composition, it also refers to the rather sporadic occurrences of instrumental solos, which are interspersed in and juxtaposed to the entire ensemble. --Frederick Fox
