ReviewThe fifth quartet opens with a mournful lament that unfolds with a nearly obsessive quality, including a quotation from Beethoven’s “Les Adieux” piano sonata. The mood stays predominantly dark throughout the quartet, a reflection no doubt of its dedication to the passing of the composer’s close friend. The middle movement expresses considerable angst and despondency, not unlike the mood of the later movements of Berg’s Lyric Suite. Textures vary between close contrapuntal conversations and homophonic declarations. The finale perks up considerably, with spritely, athletic leaps and good humor.

Stock has clearly assimilated many of the most important developments of 20th-century quartet writing while maintaining his own personal and communicative style.
