| Program Notes | My Elegy was commissioned by Lewis Kaplan, the violinist and director of the Aeolian Chamber Players and was premiered by Mr. Kaplan on December 16, 1979 at Carnegie Recital Hall. The work is simple and straightforward both in form and tonality and requires no elaborate explanation or programme. Although written in memory of a very dear friend, the Elegy can also be viewed as an homage to Bela Bartok, whose ghost haunts every page of the score. --Claude Baker |

| Review | "The work ...is simple, direct, almost Romantic in its emotional intensity, making critical use of the violin's rich and varied sonorities. Constructed along the lines of the traditional sonata-allegro form, the work begins with a series of delicate strums, gradually mixed with clusters of repeated notes and snatches of plaintive, singing phrases. These build to frenzied intensity as the violinist moves to the upper strings in a swell of ringing double stops. Finally, the simpler, melancholy motives return, and, in mirror like fashion, the work ends as it began, with the solitary strums. It is a moving, incredibly compact piece of music and was certainly one of the concert's highlights. -- Owen Hardy, Louisville Courier - Journal <BR><BR> "The universal pain [Baker's] Elegy expresses has been embodied in melodies which may be derived from Hebrew prayers. The programmatic implications of the piece have been immersed in an artistic entity not lacking even cutting dissonances. The composition is like a cry for help from all humanity."<BR>-- Hmeen Sanomat |
