| Program Notes | This is a work that is in a kind of hybrid form. There are strong aspects of a traditional four movement layout -- Allegro - Adagio - Scherzo - Prestissimo -but these are all interconnected and played in one large 13-14 minute sweep without pauses. In between movements, or, in some cases, acting like movements, are duos. The first duo (viola and cello) acts as the Adagio. The second duo (violin and cello) is a kind of sarcastic "trio" in the middle of the Scherzo. The third duo bridges the Scherzo and Prestissimo, acting as a Largo interlude. Here the featured instruments (violins) are accompanied by hushed tremolos in the lower strings. There is a final duo, between 2nd violin and viola (although continually being interrupted rudely by the other two instruments) which separates a "hushed" Prestissimo (marked bisbigliando) from a "fierce" Prestissimo (marked feroce). The piece concludes with a coda which reprises ideas, textures and specific materials from the whole piece.
