| Program Notes | If time were circular, it could easily be understood how this piece came to fruition. One hundred years ago the Statue of Liberty became a symbol of dreams, hopes and aspirations, and its inauguration celebrated the American Independence. In 1958, when I first came to this country, it was a very moving welcome for me to see her in the New York Harbor. I personally re-experienced those feelings some months ago when I was inspired to write this dedication and join today's festivities around the nation. Perhaps time truly is circular and this is why we feel so comforted by her constant protection. --Lalo Schifrin |
