Program NotesShirat Sarah which means the Song of Sarah, was inspired by the experience of my living for a short time in the Old City in Jerusalem. The three movements of the piece represent different aspects of Sarah's story: the first movement portrays her anxiety and sorrow at not being able to conceive, the second movement is her prayer to God for a child, and the third movement represents her joy and fulfillment upon conception. Although threads of Hassidic-like melody run through the entire piece, the second movement is most obviously based on an original 'nigun' or 'prayer-melody'. In the Judaic-Christian tradition of the Western world, the figure of Sarah holds a special place -- she was the first woman to maintain unfaltering faith and belief in the One Eternal. And her prayers were heard and answered, for she conceived and gave birth to a son, Isaac, while she was in her 90's! --Sheila Silver
