| Program Notes | Canvas (2000), commissioned by the College Band Directors National Association, was completed in September of 2000. The piece is dedicated to his parents. Its three movements, called "Extracts," offer the possibility of each being performed separately. The first Extract, subtitled "Landscape," is a purely instrumental movement that is arch-like in its formal construction. A section from the opening material recurs at the end of the movement. The second Extract, "Commentary," introduces a conversational element that ranges from the philosophical, through points of whimsy, to a declaration of social awareness from the five speaking voices employed. It concludes with a musical quote from the popular standard, "I'm Confessing That I Love You." The third Extract, "Psalm 121," utilizes a chorus with two brief tenor solos in a setting of the King James Version of this text. |
