| Program Notes | Lush vocal clusters introduce this "post-modern hymn." The piano and soprano saxophone enter briefly, anticipating a theme that will culminate later on the word "circling." Next the complete poem is heard in a traditional four-part harmonization of the stately hymn-tune. Then the piano, clarinet, and soprano saxophone articulate an interlude that utilizes very gradual tempo changes, giving it a very "Zen-like" quality. The "circling" motif is again heard during this interlude. The voices enter again singing the lush clusters heard at the beginning of the piece, then the "circling" motif is hinted at by the lone soprano saxophone. Finally the poem is sung a second time, but the hymn undergoes radical harmonic alterations as rich clusters move through space and spiral to climaxes on the words "God" and "circling." --Robert Lepley |
