| Program Notes | Ambient Shadows, written in 1978, is a sixteen minute composition in seven movements. The movements are fundamentally related to one another by pitch/interval shapes and timbral connections. While the first and seventh movements are somewhat more extensive with multiple and contrasting gestures, the second through sixth movements each are based on a singular idea. In these inner movements, the principal concept may be melodic, textural, or timbral, with a variation process being the compositional technique employed for extension. The title refers to an aspect of the timbral and textural procedures developed in all movements and, while somewhat suggestive, Ambient Shadows is a non-programmatic composition. --Frederick Fox |
