Marketing CopyAlexander Reinagle was America’s first composer of significant genius. Born in Portsmouth, England in 1756, the same year as Mozart, Reinagle began his musical career in Scotland under the tutelage of Raynor Taylor. At age 30, he emigrated to the then new United States, first in New York and shortly afterward in Philadelphia where his many talents were more fully appreciated. He became a music teacher in the best families, as an entrepreneur he played a major role in the reestablishment of the theatre in Philadelphia following its banishment during the Revolution, conducted and performed in numerous concerts besides presiding at the harpsichord in opera.
