| Program Notes | His work for her, Songs to the Banks of Ayr, is performed in four movements, each set to a poem by Robert Burns. The first verse chosen was Verses to Clarinda (Sent with a Pair of Wine Glasses), then Rattlin Roarin Willie, followed by Farewell Song to the Banks of Ayr and, finally, Address to Edinburgh. Set to be a highlight of the RSNO Scottish Prom, the work features Glennie reciting a few verses of each poem before the start of the movement. Ewazen has said the premiere will be one of the highlights of his career in music. “There are moments in a person’s career where everything is perfect: they are rare but they happen,” he said. “Witnessing first-hand how Evelyn can bring a piece of music to life was absolutely thrilling.” Songs to the Banks of Ayr, to be performed on June 26 in Glasgow, appears in a programme featuring Edward McGuire and Debussy’s Marche ecossaise. Glennie added: “I have been a great fan of Eric Ewazen’s music for some time and had presented to Eric the idea of basing this new concerto on my roots as a Scots woman. ”Eric loved the concept and immediately got to work exploring the poetry of Rabbie Burns, hence the title of the concerto Songs to the Banks of Ayr,” she said. |
