| Program Notes | This seven-minute work was written in 1984 while I was studying in England. What brought it about was a concert at the US Embassy in London which was to feature that year's Fulbright music scholars. I was asked to write something which would fit on this varied concert and which would use the instruments played by the other musicians studying on Fulbright grants in England that year: oboist David Rowlands and cellist David Teie. I requested and was granted the use of a pianist as well. After the premiere, I put the work aside, not completely satisfied with it. Recently, in order to achieve the sense of personal satisfaction that comes from bringing a project to a satisfactory conclusion, I turned my attention again to this piece. Virtually upon completing the revised score, I had the good fortune to hear from the oboist Marcia Butler, who, as luck would have it, was looking for just such a piece. The work itself starts slowly and languidly, gradually picks up speed and increases in drama until the climactic sections which are first about as fast, and then about as raucous, as possible. A slow and quiet coda follows, reflecting in a somewhat unsettled way on all the previous turmoil. |
