Program NotesCommissioned by violinist Andrzej Grabiec, the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (2001) is inspired by the sights and sounds of nature. The structure of the work is based intervallically on 2nds, 7ths, and 9ths and rhythmically on a 3+2 or long/short pattern. With a fair amount of the solo violin's melodic gestures drawn from the bebop style, the three movements are in the classical fast-slow-fast format with an improvised cadenza proceeding the extended coda in the last movement. Klangfarbenmelodie (sound/color/melody), in which a melodic or harmonic gesture is shared among various instruments or groups, is central to the orchestration and to the interaction between soloist and orchestra.
