| Program Notes | The Quintet consists of four movements, quite different form each other, yet also similar in terms of the materials used and the manner in which they are developed. Movement I is fast, and the primary material is lyrical and very idiomatic to strings. The development is extremely virtuosic for both the soloist and the quartet. Movement II begins with a slow, reflective duet in viola and cello, and this melody serves as the basis for an extended blues improvisation in jazz violin. The opening theme and mood return to conclude the movement. Movement III is a light, playful calypso which utilizes a simple A-A-B-A song form treated to a number of unusual interpretations. In an effort to capture the calypso sound, the string are often plucked and strummed as though they were guitars. Movement IV is very fast, and its melodies are perhaps the most complex in the entire work, angular, rangy, and often unpredictable. Swinging ostinatos lead to virtuoso unison string writing, which in turn leads to and improvised cadenza for the jazz violin soloist. A brief recapitualation and coda bring the work to its conclusion. --David Baker |
