Program NotesThis Fantasy for Trumpet and Orchestra has been inspired by a poem by Federica Garcia Lorca.

The following is a free translation of the words.

An Old Bell, the River Darro and the spirit of a poet are having an arguement about who represents the real voice of the city. I also was inspired by the artistry of the true voice of the Trumpet, Doc Severinsen.

The city is asleep and caressed by the music of its romantic rivers. The color is silver and dark green and the Sierra, kissed by the moon, is an immense tuquoise. The fog is rising from the waters. The cypress trees are awake and with languid movements they animate the atmosphere...and the wind converts Granada into an organ of tubes made of narrow streets.

Above the Alhambra towers of bronze, floats the spirit of the poet. The wind trembles and the forest has the metallic sound of the violoncellos. The convents are crying tears of iron and the Bell of de Vela is pronouncing a melody august and severe:

The Bell - "My loved city has been sung by a man and I became jealous of him. I am the heart of the poet and my sounds are his heartbeats.

The Voice - "I float here, above this palace made of nightmares. I cannot quit this city because I am the city of dreams and poetry. She has made me a poet, she forced me to sing her, telling me about her waters of gold..."

The River - "Who is speaking? My entrails are trembling this night of mystery. Who are you to talk with so much passion?:

The Poet - "I am the one who loves Granada with a passion of fire..."

The River - "I know who you are. I have looked at you many times and your purple mouth has drank my blood..."

The City - "The light is strange. The silence starts to play its sounds. The river continues its eternal kiss. Everything is blue and pink. The sound of the guitars is sublime. The flowers in the patios are opening..."

Granada is a dream of sounds and colors. --Lalo Schifrin
