Title NameSymphony No. 82 in C ‘L'Ours’ (The Bear) (Hob. I:82; critical ed.)
Marketing CopySYMPHONY NO. 82 IN C MAJOR, HOB. 1/82, was subtitled “THE BEAR” due to the drone-like bass in its rollicking finale, which reminded the French of dancing carnival bears. In 1786, Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) composed it as one of the six Paris Symphonies commissioned by Count D’Ogny for the Concerts de la Loge Olympique. The work premiered the next year in Paris under the direction of Joseph Bologne. With a larger ensemble available to him, Haydn included trumpet and timpani parts for a more grandiose effect. Instrumentation: 1.2.0.2: 2 (or tpts).0.0.0: Timp: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set). Reprint of this critical edition by H.C. Robbins Landon.
