| Marketing Copy | Schelle characterizes Hammerstein as "a brief, schizophrenic etude." The work draws it's aesthetic inspiration from the classic challenge etudes of Chopin, but more directly from two specific Beethoven sources, including brief fragments and references to Waldstein and Hammerklavier. The motifs fuse in development and extension of the work's original materials, notwithstanding a miniaturized quote from Rogers and Hammerstein's This Nearly Was Mine, as if a personalized autobiographical touch from each performer. |

| Program Notes | Hammerstein is a brief, schizophrenic etude, commissioned (by Mrs. Sam Moxley) as the required new work to be performed by the 12 national semi-finalists during the 1995 American Pianists Association competition/auditions. Hammerstein draws it's aesthetic 'inspiration' from the classic challenge etudes of Chopin, but more directly from two specific Beethoven sources (the AP A organization was formally known as the Beethoven Foundation). Tiny fragments of (and brief references to) Beethoven's Waldstein and Hammerklavier fuse in development and extension of the work's original materials, notwithstanding a miniaturized quote from Rogers and Hammerstein's This Nearly Was Mine (mm. 142 - 145) ... as if a personalized autobiographical touch from each performer … |
