Program NotesFaces of the Blues was premiered at the Ninth World Saxophone Congress in Kawasaki, Japan (1988). For those who accept the label "Third Stream", this piece undeniably conforms to its definition. That is, Baker has combined both classical and jazz elements in such a way that neither idiom loses its idiosyncratic identity throughout the piece. Beginning with the classically influenced introduction, the piece transforms itself into a blues only to revert back and forth from jazz to classical idioms several times throughout, while the solo saxophone alternates between jazz improvisation and ensemble playing, before resolving quietly on the last note.
