Program NotesRHAPSODIES, for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, was commissioned by the Society for New Music on a grant from the Meet the Composer/Reader's Digest Consortium Commissioning program in conjunction with the Atlanta-based Thamyris ensemble and the Virtuosi della Rosa in Portland, Oregon. Each of the three movements of the work is a freely evolving musical piece that grows from a single expressive idea, and the entire composition can be viewed as a suite of these rhapsodic pieces. The first Rhapsody is labeled "Con forza" and is indeed a forceful piece with a strong rhythmic profile. At times, insistent repetitions of patterns drive the music on; the ending, stubbornly hammering out the B-D minor third interval, is certainly music of this type. The second Rhapsody, marked "Lyrico," is slow and relaxed, with a languid quality to the musical flow. The third Rhapsody is labeled "Allegretto disinvolto," is "free and easy," and is dance-like in character. The English translation of "disinvolto" is "free and easy," and I view this final piece as music which is breezy and not too serious. Of all three Rhapsodies, this is the one which might suggest a cultural or national theme-as rhapsodies have often done in former days-with a hint of a Scottish dance character in its triple meter rhythmic patterns. -David Liptak

Review"The closing work, by David Liptak, was more ambitious. Titled Rhapsodies, it begins with a vigorous, even aggressive, minimalist essay. The middle section is tense in its ruminations, while the finale consists of a series of severe and urgent statements."--The Post-Standard, Syracuse, NY<BR><BR>

"Liptak's energetic work for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano reflected the influences of Stravinsky and Messiaen."<BR>--The Cleveland Plain Dealer
