Program NotesBlast! as the word itself is defined, is "a violent release of confined energy, accompanied by loud sounds and shock waves...also, a big exuberant party; afestive celebration." This all seemed an appropriate aesthetic for the commission at hand (although the work was completed before the title was chosen).

With occasional passing references to the history of the South Bend Symphony organization, the work surges and relaxes, explores, explodes, and celebrates. For the sake of reality, a few moments of edgy, uneasy calm (and cautious introspection) are fused with the more prominent musical elements of simple honest sentiment (a tune in the middle of the piece, in the real key of F Major!) and exciting, bombastic energy. --Michael Schelle
