| Program Notes | Schiff's Canzonetta is a four-minute jazz-infused solo for trumpet with strings, four horns and two percussionists, presented as part of the Gund/Simonyi Farewell Commissions, a series of 18 new works by leading American composers which are being premiered throughout the 2010-2011 season. Seattle Symphony commissioned these works in honor of Music Director Gerard Schwarz’s Farewell Season with the generous support of philanthropists Agnes Gund and Charles Simonyi. The solo part may optionally be divided among a full orchestral trumpet section. “I first came to know Jerry when he was the Co-Principal Trumpet at the New York Philharmonic, and gave an astonishing performance of the trumpet solo that opens the Symphony of Three Orchestras by my teacher Elliott Carter. For this occasion, I decided also to write a trumpet solo, but in a style closer to Arturo Sandoval and Clark Terry than to Carter.” --David Schiff |
