The melody has also been known as simply CAROL. The tune soon became the setting for the hymn "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear," written by Edmund Hamilton Sears written in 1849, first published in 1850, Boston: The Christian Register. This setting of the text is among the most well-known Christmas carols in the United States.
