| Program Notes | Can We All Get Along? was commisssioned by Thamyris with the request that it revolve around the theme of social justice. Rodney King's tragically prophetic question is ripe for social commentary and aesthetic address. Divided into seven sections, the composition for flute, clarinet, piano and percussion is based on one principle theme which is finally heard in the last movement. The work symbolically celebrates the beauty in human diversity, but hints at the difficulty within our society to celebrate this diversity. The piece "begs" the question its title suggests and offers the resolution of the final theme as its own interpretive answer. |
