| Program Notes | Speaking in Drums was commissioned by the Richmond Symphony and the Minnesota Orchestra. It was premiered by the Minnesota Orchestra in January 1995 with Peter Kogan, the orchestra's timpanist, as soloist. It is scored for a set of five timpani at center stage and five-part string orchestra, divided into tow sections each to create a 10-part texture. The midddle movement focuses at times on instrumental solos. The timpanist uses a number of mallets, as well as pedals, to create a variety of tone colors. --Francis Church |
