| Program Notes | Symphony for String Orchestra explores the process of growth, healing and spiritual renewal that accompanies meaningful transitions in our lives. It depicts safe passage through a personal winter of discontent into the deeper joy that can follow. The first movement, "Introspection," is intense and unsettled. Powerful surges of restless energy give way to poignant visions of beauty and perfection, only to drift into dissatisfaction and yearning. The title of the second movement, "Epiphany," is familiar as the name of the winter season in the church year that signifies Jesus revelation as the promised Messiah. In a broader sense, an "epiphany" is a sudden, clarifying flash of insight and recognition. James Joyce, among others, employed this concept as a significant motif in his writings. The movement begins listlessly, almost bleakly. A burst of life suddenly animates the music, which builds to a rich climax. It ends peacefully. The finale, "Celebration," is a joyous dance. Celebration is both an act of thanksgiving and vitally important ceremony. It is not a solitary thing; it involves our families and communities, and it helps to make such groupings possible. It doesn't require that all is well everywhere. In fact, it's probably all the more important when all is not well. The act of celebration rejoices in the fact that light has penetrated the darkness, and provides a way for others to catch a glimpse of the light. -- Jonathan Bruce Brown |
