| Program Notes | This music, unlike most of Wells' output, does not "follow a story line," describe a scene, or--in any way--fall into the category of program music. It was performed by the Laclede Quartet in 1987. The complete quartet of four movements was performed several times in 1989. The metamorphosis from quartet to full string orchestra in 1988 in not a particularly unusual happening; Borodin's "Nocturne for Strings", Gershwin's "Lullaby for Strings", and Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" each started as the slow movement of a string quartet. Leonard Slatkin and the Orchestra included this piece in their new recording "American Album" just released March 5 by BMG (RCA Victor). --From Saint Louis Symphony program, 17 March 1991. |
