| Program Notes | THE GARDEN was composed in 1981, and was first performedin Santa Barbara that year. In a sense, it is a piece which never should have been written. The text, by 12-year-old Franta Bass, is from a collection of children's poetry and paintings entitled I NEVER SAW ANOTHER BUTTERFLY. the child poets and artists represented in this collection were all prisoners in the Terezin concentration camp; of the 15,000 imprisoned there, 100 survived. I have attempted to juxtapose the separate realities of the present and the past by using live instruments for the former and prerecorded tape for the latter. I have also tried to link these realities by utilizing the same music and text in both media, in order to obscure that artificial moment in time when present becomes past. Simultaneously, through the use of children's voices, which seemingly grow younger, that artificial moment is thrust into the future.
