| Program Notes | Nightscenes, completed in May 1988, is an eighteen minute composition in one movement. While there is no specific program or story line, the title refers to imaginary scenes or moods I associate with the night. As a result, Nightscenes is comprised of many episodes enclosed in four major sections. The opening section is slow and features a line first heard in harmonics then realized by an extensive viola solo, surrounded by a string orchestra chord and percussion bell sounds. The following moderately fast section moves from episode to episode highlighting various percussion instrumental combinations and various string techniques. The third large section is slow with its four episodes being variations on several ideas drawn from previous episodes. The final section is an allegro and is essentially a series of canons. An episode of three triangles, in rhythmic canon, signals the last large section that features a long, slow line in the lower strings accompanied by shor glissandi (canons in upper strings) and percussion points. This leads to the coda characterized by rapid string figurationb along with percussion punctuation. The final cadence is a very brief statement recalling the opening of Nightscenes. --Frederick Fox |
