| Marketing Copy | BODY LOOPS (for piano and orchestra) is inspired by the book DESCARTES’ ERROR by neuroscientist Antonio Damasio. The book describes two ways we experience memories which he calls the “as if loop” and the “body loop.” The music represents emotionally charged memories as they travel the loop from mind to body and back. It is structured in a series of musical loops in which ideas are presented in varying states of intensity. Just as in real life, the loops are suddenly triggered by events, which in this case are musical gestures. |

| Program Notes | In his book DESCARTES+ ERROR, neuroscientist Antonio Damasio describes two ways we experience memories which he calls the +as if loop+ and the +body loop.+ The +body loop+ is the path +from mind/brain to body, and back to the mind/brain.+ When memories are experienced in the body loop, we may suddenly cry, shudder, or our blood pressure may rise. The +as if+ loop is the +fainter image of an emotional body state+ in which the brain +bypasses the body proper,+ conjuring up a +semblance of feeling within the brain alone.+ BODY LOOPS (for piano and orchestra) concerns emotionally charged memories as they travel the loop from mind to body and back. The piece is structured in a series of musical loops in which ideas are presented in varying states of intensity. Just as in real life, the loops are suddenly triggered by events, which in this case are musical gestures. The work was commissioned by pianist Michael Boriskin, who performed it in 1996 with the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston conducted by GisÅle Ben-Dor. --Bruce Adolphe |
