Unpublished after his death, the work derives its material from a pair of songs, a Czech folk tune and the Danish song Dronning Dagmar. The second song relates the death-bed confession of Queen Dagmar, wife of King Valdemar, in which she divulges her only earthly sin: lacing her sleeves on a Sunday.
