Program NotesThe CONCERTO FOR TWO CELLOS is in three contrasting movements. The first movement opens quietly with the two soloists in dialogue. After this lyrical introduction comes a dramatically conceived Allegro which puts cello against cello, and the two cellos against the orchestra. The movement drives to a climax, a quote from the sixteenth century chorale "Es ist genug" (It is enough), at which time, appropriately, the music winds down to a subdued close. The second movement explores the lyrical capabilities of the solo cellos, beginning with a lovely tune played by one soloist, followed by a similar, but contrasting melody by the other soloist. In the end these two tunes are woven together in some of the most beautiful idiomatic writing imaginable. The final Allegro movement begins with all of the fireworks one would expect in the finale of a concerto. And with two soloists available, the composer hints at the prospect of a real perpetuum mobile, weaving an imaginative, dance-like backdrop for the display of the soloists. This playfulness is interrupted, however, by an extended cadenza that draws on themes from throughout the concerto. The cadenza slowly gains momentum and launches us back into the dance, which concludes the work.
