| Program Notes | As the title implies, A Bottle of Notes and Some Voyages sets the familiar against the unknown. The concept of departure and return is developed in this set of variations for orchestra, which is based upon a five-note group. Though the same five notes journey together through the work, their roles and relationships change as they create and encounter new sonic environments. The work begins with a three minute introduction that presents an electronic tape and an invented double bass technique as the backdrop to an alto flute solo. This is surrounded by the clicking sound of crickets and a tutti rhythmic fanfare. With each variation retaining the original material in some form, variety is created by the introduction of shifting moods, varied orchestration, and the fresh ordering of pitches. The use of contrasting bold and delicate sections reinforces the interplay of anticipation and surprise. |
