| Program Notes | The Sinfonia no. 3 for Orchestra was completed in the summer of 2002. It consists of three concise movements constructed from motivic materials that are recognizable upon their recurrence. The first movement begins with a dramatic five-note motive in the brass section. Material of a more sustained nature follows. After a climax, an altered version of the five-note motive is stated in the brass. The melodic content heard earlier reappears at the end of the movement. The second movement begins with a melodic line stated first in an oboe solo. It encompasses twelve different notes divided into two phrases of six notes. These phrases are repeated with a different instrumental color. After an intense ascending passage in the strings, trombones and tubas are utilized in a turbulent and highly rhythmic section. The return of the first six notes apportioned between an oboe and strings brings the movement to a quiet ending. The brief introduction presented by flutes, strings, harp, and percussion at the beginning of the third movement is followed by a three-note motive. Its reiteration, expanded to six notes, provides the core of an insistent and powerful dynamic statement. --George Walker |

| Review | "There were several reasons to applaud the world premiere of George Walker's Sinfonia No. 3 on Friday morning, beginning with the rugged expansiveness of the score.... The piece lasts 16 minutes and unfolds in three tightly constructed, terse movements. Walker favors muscular, thrusting gestures that build into a brassy mass and give way to quiet but restless energy. An expertly controlled sway of tension and release is heard throughout....
