Program NotesThe Ballad of Bill Doolin (fourteen verses on the life of a desperado was commissioned by the Aspen Music Festival and is based on the three final years in the life of Bill Doolin, and American desperado. Doolin, an outlaw from Arkansas, operated in the regions of the Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas Territories, staging carefully planned bank robberies throughout the area in the late 1880's and early 1890's. He was shot and killed by Marshall Heck Thomas near Lawson, Oklahoma, while attempting to escape with his wife and child to Mexico.

The story of Bill Doolin is told in traditional ballad form, each verse of the ballad relating an episode in Bill Doolin's life. Musically the work is based on a "ballad" theme which develops through each verse along with the story. The "ballad" theme is heard in full at the beginning of the work, and like conventional folk-ballads, is heard again in a reprise at the conclusion of the piece.
