| Program Notes | Zest: Fanfare for Orchestra (2001) was commissioned by The Fanfare Project. The work is dedicated to Christopher Seaman and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. A standard dictionary gives two definitions for the word "zest": 1) flavor or interest; piquancy and 2) spirited enjoyment; gusto. This brief and joyous fanfare for orchestra seeks to explore both of these: "piquant" harmonies through combinations of primary triads and bitonality and "spirited enjoyment" through its energetic tone and treatment. An extended solo for three trumpets present the main theme of the work at the outset. This forms the basis for all of the material for the remainder of the work. --Carson Cooman |
