| Program Notes | What Dreams May Come? was commissioned by the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, Ignat Solzhenitsyn, Music Director. To my surprise and delight, the work was specifically requested as a way to celebrate my 50th birthday (May 31, 2005). Thoughts about the meaning of turning 50 naturally turn into reflections on mortality--the kind of thing that keeps one up at night. My daughter Katja will turn seven in the year I turn 50, and because of her, I am determined to stay as young as possible for as long as possible. ("Eat an apple every day and see the doctor anyway," as the song goes, although for me it+s yoga.) What Dreams May Come? is not only about shuffling off this mortal coil, as Hamlet says, although that plays a part in its mood structure. The primary impulse for the piece is the way obsessive thoughts, almost-dreams, unclear memories, half-formed desires, and fears that are suppressed during the daytime, all dance through the mind just before falling asleep. I have come to expect and enjoy this show, and it is the rhythm, energy, and beauty (seriously) of this involuntary display that gave me the idea for this music. To Ignat Solzhenitsyn and Robert Elias, the PCO's Executive Director, I give my sincere thanks for this commission, and for the opportunity to confront in music this very big birthday. For the joy and meaning they give my life, I dedicate this piece to Marija and Katja, my wife and daughter. --Bruce Adolphe |
