| Program Notes | Zebra (for youth orchestra and electronic tape) was composed in 1981 for the Brunswick (ME) Regional Youth Orchestra and was premiered by that orchestra. There have been a number of other performances since then, including the Northern Ohio Youth Symphony, the Houston Youth Symphony, the Butler University Orchestra, and the La Jolla (CA) Civic Symphony--the latter for youth concerts. The name Zebra was inspired by the piece's musical premise: a series of variations upon a simple diatonic tune, alternating between a straightforward tonal style and an "experimental" style stressing cluster sonorities and unsynchronized textures. The alternation between the two styles suggests contrasting black and white stripes, hence the title. During the more avant-garde sounding variations, the orchestra players are asked to vocalize on syllables drawn from the word ZEBRA ("Zee," Rab," and "Buh"). --Washington DC Youth Orchestra Program, 22May94. |
