Program NotesVisions and Revelations was directly inspired by a prophetic vision experienced by St. John. In this vision John saw the throne of God in heaven. The details can be found in Chapter Four of the Book of Revelation by St. John. While in one continuous movement, Visions and Revelations can be divided into three distinct sections. The music in the first section is in a declamatory style, and the rhythm and inflections of the words of St. John determined the rhythm and pitch selections made by the composer. The middle section represents St. John+s vision of the "sea of glass." The music in the last section corresponds to the activity of the "four beasts" and "the twenty-four elders" in their worship of God.

Besides the descriptive element of the vision of St. John, a history of the French horn also threads its way through Visions and Revelations. The ancestor of the French horn was the hunting horn, which did not have any valves. This instrument is reflected by the use of "hunting call" figures early in the concerto and by restricting the performer to only the overtones available to this valveless horn later in the piece. When the horn first became a member of the orchestra, horn players were able to achieve more notes by the use of a hand-stopping

Review"Winteregg's Visions and Revelations is more of a landscape narrative than an actual concerto for horn. From fanfare figures to moments of pointillism, to lyricism, to bold angular lines, the gamut of horn technique is here. Flutter-tonguing, large leaps, stopped horn, and manipulations of the overtone series permeate the entire work. It's an atmospheric piece, which could even serve in a Star Wars sequel or prequel. Its melodic sections juxtaposed with eerie slides and extensions of pitch centers...heighten emotion and passion....This is a magnificent piece. It has an easy-to-grasp first hearing nature."--JD, The Horn Call
