| Program Notes | Equinox Dances (2000) for piano trio was commissioned by and dedicated to the Serafino Trio. The work begins in utmost stillness -- a single repeated, high-register piano chord arising out of nothing. The opening section has the aura and sonorities of a nocturne as transformations of melodies reminiscent of plainchant appear and disappear. The first section leads directly into the second as the nocturne becomes a frenetic dance (interrupted by a middle section recalling transformations of themes from the opening of the work) and leads to a exuberant conclusion. The musical material for the first section is based heavily around the notes and combinations of F# and G. The second section is centered around transformations of a E-(D#)-C-D pattern. --Carson Cooman |
