| Program Notes | Into the Sun, commissioned by Jim and Elaine Wolfensohn for the opening concerts of Leonard Slatkin's first season as music director of the National Symphony Orchestra and in celebration of the Kennedy Center's 25th anniversary, was composed last winter and spring, taking public statements by John F. Kennedy asits point of departure and incorporating poems by Kenneth Patchen. Into the Sun is laid out in five sections, each of which alludes to a specific portion of the Kennedy statements; four are settings of Patchen's poems, while the middle one is an orchestral interlude. The composer advises that the content and character of the poems illumine aspects of John F. Kennedy's inner life, in contradistinction to the public life represented in his speeches; in this sense he sees the five sections of the work starting with a reference to the personal feelings that gave rise to the images of "Camelot" and the New Frontier and then "progressing in a line from love of the individual...to love of family...and ultimately love for humanity..." |
