| Program Notes | Society Music was composed on commission from the Syracuse Society for New Music between April and July of 1986 and received its world premiere on November 4, 1986 in Crouse Auditorium on the campus of Syracuse University. In a single movement made up of five sections, the work is one of several by the composer, which bring together strikingly different styles of music. In Society Music, an opening section, pensive and lyrical in tone, establishes the important pitch, motivic and harmonic references for the work. This opening section and its modified return at the work's conclusion, are set off from each other by the "society music" of the work's title. Not a "society music" of decorous gesture and elegant tone with a family of potted palms as backdrop, this is music that reflects a more general impression of American society, a music of militant and aggressive good cheer, interrupted in its middle by troubled allusions to the work's opening, music that is reminiscent of jingles, half-time shows, political campaigns, wildly upbeat showtunes, all of which explode before, or in the face of, a return to more serious matters. The work is dedicated to the memory of composer and pianist, Brian Israel, who was for several years associated with the Society for New Music. In its juxtaposition of the very serious with the wildly comic Society Music attempts to capture something of Brian's spirit. Society Music was premiered by the Society for New Music, Edward Murray, conductor on November 4, 1986 at Syracuse University. It has been recorded by the Society for New Music and is commercially available on compact disc (Opus One, CD 168). |
